I was very pleased with the bowls upon their arrival as they are very pleasing to the eye. I immediately applied a first coat of mineral oil, as I began to prepare then for use. I had decided to rinse and season them once a day for a week before I put them to use. (I had planned to season them once a week after that for a month, and once a month thereafter.)

Upon my third day of seasoning, I had just poured about two tablespoons of mineral oil into each of the bowls when I got called to the phone. The mineral oil sat in the bowls for about five minutes before I returned to wipe the oil inside and out. When I lifted the bowls from the counter, there were oil stains on the counter. Looking at the bottoms of the bowls I saw that the mineral oil had seemed to seep though the bottoms of the bowls.

I finished seasoning the bowls and let them sit for about four hours and decided to fill the bowls with some water to see if they were leaking or if i might just have spilled some of the oil.

Both bowls leaked water.

My conclusion is that if both mineral oil and water can leak through the bottom of the bowl, so too can food oils if I were to use these for salads. Food oil deposits in the bottom of the bowl will lead to bacteria build up over time (which is why they you are cautioned not to season salad bowls with food oils), so these bowls will not be used in my home.
