I have good things to say, but I also have some criticism to share about this lovely dinnerware set.

The glazing on each plate, bowl and mug is beautiful and unique. No two are the precise duplicate of the other, which I find refreshing. Even the wavey edges are not exact copies; they all follow the same general lines but each piece is an individual.

The pieces have a nice weight and a sturdy feel to them. The colouring is soft, making a statement without being an intense, bold, in-your-face colour. It's a very calming blue to look at and the pattern is very pretty without being overly feminine. After all, my husband helped pick this pattern! (It was either this or plain black... I voted for the pretty blue)

The plates are massive! We typically use the salad plates as our dinner plates, since the size is more than adequate. I use the dinner plates as serving platters. As for the bowls, they are also quite large. My husband says they are perfect for cereal because they are big enough that he can pour a double serving instead of having to refill his bowl.

Be sure to measure the depth of your kitchen cabinets and check to see that these will fit. The dinner plates are at the very edge of our cabinets. There is no wiggle room between the back of the cabinet and the closed door. It is a surprisingly perfect fit, but it may not be so perfect for everyone.

We have an average-sized microwave. While this dinnerware is microwave safe, it may not even fit in the microwave. The dinner plates certainly won't fit, so we use a salad plate now and then. Because the plates are square instead of round, the corners tend to bump into the sides of the microwave as it turns. If you have a smaller microwave, you won't be able to put these plates in there.

The bowls take up a lot of space. Because each piece is unique and deep, they do not fit snugly inside one another. This means they make a tall stack in your cabinet and you must lay them face down in the dishwasher instead of on their sides. Not an issue for us, but it may be an issue for someone.

A note about shipping: I ordered two sets of this dinnerware, which arrived in two separate boxes. One was packaged very well with lots of extra padding; the other was packaged very poorly. The well-packaged one still had a couple of broken pieces and a slightly chipped bowl (still usable). The poorly-packaged one was a complete mess. Only one dinner plate, one salad plate and one bowl survived the shipping process. I was sadly short of having 8 complete table settings. I called Amazon customer service and they sorted things out right away. Because the box contained so many broken pieces, they did not require me to return the items (saving me time and money). Instead, they simply shipped a third complete set of dinnerware at no cost to me. Again, the box arrived poorly packaged with many broken pieces. When all was said and done, though, I ended up with 8 dinner plates, 8 salad plates, 9 bowls and 12 mugs. The mugs were intact in all three sets (leading me to believe they should have packed each piece the way they packed the mugs). Because I ended up with 8 complete sets, I walked away satisfied. Amazon customer service worked with me and minimized what could have become a massive headache.

I hope all of this helps you in your decision-making process. There are definitely pros and cons to this one. This Gibson Spring Grove works fine for my husband and I, but some observations I've noted may be a deal breaker for others.

UPDATE April 2013:
We have now been using this dinnerware set for about a year. No pieces have broken during everyday use, however, a couple of pieces now have chips in them. I have noticed it is quite easy to chip an edge of these plates and bowls, so I have learned to handle them with care. If I rush while stacking plates, I'll chip one. I'm guessing the wavy edges have something to do with this, as they can easily catch on the underlying plate while stacking.

I've noticed it's difficult to exercise portion control with this dinnerware. The bowls and plates are simply too big. Most square sets are larger, which isn't good. You put food on a plate and think there isn't enough, so you add extra. It's easier to eat more than you need to when your dinnerware is too big!

Between the chipping problem, issues with visual portion control and the plates being too large to work properly in the microwave, we have now retired this set and replaced it with a set from the 99 cent store that suits us perfectly. My husband still uses these massive bowls for cereal, though.
