Hario Ice Tea Pot 'Pure' Review

I chose a Hario "Pure" to replace a Hario pitcher I'd ordered from Japan some years back and subsequently broke. It was identical in capacity and function to the Pure but had a different pattern and no handle. I really liked my previous pot (for which, I regret to say, I paid MUCH more than this one) and finally decided the time had come to bite the bullet and get a new one.

To be honest, I was less than enchanted with the Pure's handle; I really preferred my plain pitcher. But the fact of the matter was that at the time I purchased my Pure, the price on Amazon was so much lower than anywhere else that it would have been foolish for me to pass on it, especially since it was priced even cheaper than the plain pitchers. Despite my initial reservations, including my fear that the handle increased the likelihood of bumping and breaking the pitcher, I've come to appreciate the handle's utility because accidental dropping is less likely. And believe me, that's important because if these pitchers have one flaw, it's their fragility. I merely tapped the interior of my first one and it shattered so should you opt for a Hario pitcher, be VERY careful indeed and try not to even bump it. One would think borosilicate glass would be tougher but that's not the case here.

The pitcher handles loose leaves beautifully; I recommend starting with 8 g of your favorite tea leaves to one liter of water and then letting everything soak at least overnight in the fridge. You can also freeze a liter of water into ice cubes, add them to the pitcher, then add the tea leaves, and leave on the counter until the ice melts completely (you'll probably have to keep adding ice as it melts because I don't think the pitcher holds the entire volume of ice all at once). Either way, you'll have delicious iced tea that's very low in bitterness because caffeine is better extracted with hot water. Adjust the amount of leaves you use according to taste--should your tea not be robust enough, add another gram or two of leaves the next time you brew. The special lid and its filter do a superior job of keeping the leaves out of what you're drinking and the pour is beautiful--the tea splashes and bubbles as it pours, increasing your anticipation of a delicious cold drink. It's brilliant. And the whole shebang cleans quite easily, too, although again, be careful.

One thing Hario should do is increase the lid's silicone seal by just a fraction more than its current width. There's a tendency for the seal to be not quite as perfect as it could and should be, which means sometimes tea pours from the sides of the spout--not a big deal but a tad annoying. In spite of its very minor deficiencies, the lid does a fine job of keep refrigerator odors out of the pitcher, so fear not. As long as the lid's openings are oriented at 3 and 9 o'clock while the pitcher isn't in use, everything will be fine.

The Hario Ice [sic] Tea Pot 'Pure' is a wonderful means of introducing one to the joys of cold-brewed tea. I have Japanese and Chinese green tea that I bought, sampled, and put away years ago and while it's no good for conventional brewing it's delicious made in this pitcher, allowing me to plow through my ancient inventory sans waste. Mind you, this can be used for just about any type of tea; green is what I need to get rid of at this point. I highly recommend it, along with a nice portable scale (I've had this one for years: My Weigh Triton T2 550g x 0.1g Digital Pocket (Hand held) Scale, Formula Scale, Jewelry Scale with Hard Cover Case) for consistent results. As long as you treat it respectfully, your Hario pitcher will be a delightful addition to your kitchen and beverage repertoire.
