The "Gaiwan," comprised of a tea bowl, a saucer and a cover, has been the preferred vessel to brew and serve tea in China since the Ming Dynasty. The gaiwan can be used to brew tea prior to transfer to smaller gungfu-style containers for consumption or the tea may be sipped directly from the bowl. Bana Tea Company's Gaiwan is made of refined alabaster-white bone china that is strong and highly translucent. The dimensions of the gaiwan are: 4" wide x 3 1/2" tall.

It should first be noted that this is a large gaiwan with a full 6 oz capacity, measured not from the rim but from the circle of the cup actually covered by the lid. It appeared smaller to me when I first unpacked it, but only because the cup sits very low in the raised saucer. By most standards this is a large gaiwan, which is what I was looking for. I do wish that the seller had listed the gaiwan's actual capacity, rather than its outside dimensions.

I must also say that this gaiwan is somewhat, not "very," translucent, and only when held up directly against a light source. I own a gaiwan made of very translucent porceline, with a shell & components substantially thinner (and probably stronger) than this one, but it came to me at three times the price of this one. Don't buy this with an expectation of an airy & etherial experience. This is a fine, classically shaped gaiwan, very well made of good bone china. It's not the holy grail of gaiwans (those can only be had at "holy grail" prices), but this is a beautiful piece at a very good price--an excellent value.
